Actually been practicing boxing for almost two years now. During the lockdown I lost my connection to kendo and when life got back to normal I had gained almost 30 lbs.
I live close to a boxing gym and decided to check out a session and it almost killed me! About 15 minutes in I was already thinking about crawling out the back way. Fortunately I persevered that day and for the months after.
I am now at the point where my basics are good enough for me to consider sparring but I also know that means more time in longterm one-on-one training with a coach. Also, my fitness is much better that will need to be improved considerably in preparation for an amateur fight (3 rounds).
I use ChatGPT to build out training plans and it works really well! My typical session is:
- 9 minutes assault bike
- 9 minutes cardio footwork
- 4 rounds on the heavy bag (3-minute rounds with 30-second breaks)
- 9 minutes shadow-boxing
- 20 minutes of full body stretching
- Calisthenics (push-ups, crunches, leg raises, squats)
Next step in this journey is finding a coach to work with long-term. Ideally, it would be a coach who can provide not just boxing drills but, also, fitness and training guidance. I found one a while ago but her schedule is pretty packed and it doesn’t align with mine so I need to figure that out.
In the meantime, I am loving this new aspect of my life! I’m healthier and happier now and I have a goal that motivates me to train and to be better every day.
